Cleaning the smoker is usually a pain especially when you’re like me who hates using chemicals or cleaners to clean the inside of the smoker. What I do though is get a paint scraper and scrape off any big pieces of gunk sticking inside the smoker, and that’s about it. However, I do like keeping the metal racks clean, and I pull these racks out to clean them every few cooks. I cook on my smoker almost every weekend; thus, it can become a big task.
After struggling with the racks for a number of times, I found something that actually works. And the best thing about this is it only costs a dollar per bottle. It’s called “Totally Awesome Degreaser” which you can purchase in Dollar Tree stores.
In cleaning the racks, I use a large water heater drain pan from Lowe’s which I purchased for $20, place the racks inside, spray each one with the “Totally Awesome Degreaser,” fill the pan with water until the racks are totally covered and allow them to soak for about 3-4 hours. Once done, put on a pair of gloves, lift the rack out and hose off. Everything should come off, and your rack should be spotless.
I also spray the outside of my cookers with “Totally Awesome Degreaser” before going to a big contest or to a catering event. I have to warn you though; this took some of the paint off of my Ole Hickory, so you have to work fast while using this and be very careful.
Now, I’m used to rinsing and “burning” the racks before I place any meat on them. After giving the racks a good rinse, I place them back in the smoker, start a fire and bring the cooker up to 300 degrees for about an hour. After that, it’s ready for another load of meat.
I highly suggest the “Totally Awesome Degreaser.” Aside from its affordability, it is something that would actually work.
